When it comes down to it, smoking is smoking - whether that’s cannabis or tobacco - which means second-hand cannabis smoke is just as much of a concern as second-hand smoke from cigarettes.
According to the CDC second-hand cannabis smoke has many of the same toxins and cancer-causing chemicals that are found in tobacco. There are always risks associated with your heart and lungs if you are exposed to second-hand cannabis smoke, including asthma attacks, lung irritation, and the risk of respiratory infections.
Cannabis also contains the psychoactive compound THC that can pass to people that inhale second-hand cannabis smoke - including pets and children. Studies have shown that people who have been exposed to THC through second-hand smoke do have detectable amounts of THC in their system. This is something to be cautious with as exposure to second-hand smoke in children and youths can lead to developmental issues.
Studies still need to be done to determine the exact effects of cannabis and THC for both the short term and the long term. If you are concerned with THC exposure, you can switch to CBD hemp flower which has minimal amounts of THC - and no psychoactive effects - and all of the therapeutic benefits of natural CBD. If you prefer to stay away from smoking altogether you can even add hemp flower to your smoothies or use hemp trim for your favorite foods so you can still reap the benefits without inhaling.
