Pune is the home of many historic sites. It is a perfect city to explore for history lovers. Shaniwar Wada in Pune, Maharashtra has a great history. This historic fort is more than just old walls and gates. Let's know the 5 things Shaniwada is famous for.
Shaniwar Wada was built in 1732 by Peshwa Baji Rao I. This was the home of Maratha empires. It was the headquarters of the Peshwas.
Delhi Darwaza is the main entrance gate of Shaniwar Wada. There are a total of 5 gates. Delhi Gate is 21 feet high and built with teak wood and iron. It was designed in a way so even elephants can easily pass through this gate. The door faces the north direction towards Delhi; hence, it is named Delhi Darwaza.
Shaniwar Wada is named after being built on a Saturday (shaniwar). Peshwa Baji Rao I chose Saturday deliberately, as it is an auspicious day in Hindu tradition. Its foundation stone was laid on Saturday and it was even inaugurated on Saturday. "Wada" means "residence"; hence, it is called Shaniwar Wada.
Shaniwar Wada has a deep and sad history of a 16-year-old Peshwa, Narayan Rao, who was murdered by hired assassins. It was his own uncle Raghunathrao and aunt Anandibai who made him killed and no guard in the palace came to save him, which broke the unity of the Marathas.
Shaniwar Wada has faced 2 attacks. One in 1818 by the British, which collapsed the top six stories. In 1828, a fire raged for seven days, destroying the remaining wooden structures, palaces, and halls, leaving only the stone fortification walls and gates.
